Where to Eat Before an Eels Game: A Church St Guide to CommBank Stadium
The real question is not where the food is, it is whether you will make kickoff. Timing, what to order when you have a deadline, and the walk to the ground.
You have tickets to an Eels game at CommBank Stadium and you want to eat first. The question is not really where the food is, it is whether you will make kickoff.
Here is the honest version from a restaurant eleven minutes' walk from the ground.
The timing that actually works
For a 7:50pm kickoff, book a table for 5:30 or 6pm. That gives you a proper sit-down meal, time to pay without rushing, and a walk to the ground that is not a jog. If you book at 6:30 you will spend the meal watching the clock, and Greek food does not reward being rushed.
For an afternoon game, eat after rather than before. The walk back up Church St once the crowd has thinned is far more pleasant than fighting toward the ground on a full stomach.
What to order when you have a deadline
Skip the long build. Order dips and pita to start, they arrive fast, then go straight to something off the grill.
- A Souvlaki Plate or Gyros Plate in pork, chicken or lamb. Substantial, quick off the grill, and comes with pita, tzatziki, salad and chips.
- A pita if you are tight for time. Gyros or souvlaki wrapped and eaten in twenty minutes.
- The Mix Grill if there are four or more of you and you have booked early enough to share properly.
Tell us you are going to the game when you sit down. We will get you out on time.
Getting to the ground
From 316 Church St it is a straight walk south down Church, across the river, and into the stadium precinct. Around eleven or twelve minutes at a normal pace, longer if the crowd is thick close to kickoff. Allow twenty on a big night.
After the game
We are open until 10pm Monday to Friday and 11pm on weekends, so an early evening game usually means you can come back afterwards. If you have won, the Olympus Plate is the correct response. If you have lost, the dips and a long sit are the correct response.
Book online, or call (02) 9891 4174 for a group. On game nights, please book, do not walk in and hope.
